CityGirl Guide……Why Your Busy City Schedule Is Killing Your Success
“Why are we so easily complexed by the successes of our peers that we immediately feel we should start moving faster and start stressing more?” Forbes Woman
What would your business and your body be like if you weren’t engaging in 101 connections, activities and comparisons on a daily basis?
It recently occurred to me how different my days are since leaving London and moving to Italy.
No more 6a.m buzzing alarms set to snooze ample times over as I lie in bed exhausted wondering how I will muster the energy to get to my train on time, let alone teach a total of 150 teenage boys, host events and attend meetings all in one day!
As I walked along the beach today I realized two things:
A- I have finally let go of the need to fill every second of my day with “productive” activities and interactions.
B– I am much more naturally productive and energised, from morning latte to lights out, because of this!
Is it because my routine has vastly changed or is it simply that I’ve let go of the urgency to do more, have more , all in order to be more?
I now understand what I got from my crazy, action filled , jam packed City schedule:
- Busyness , which I equated with success.
- Ample connections , most of which I couldn’t ever keep up with anyway.
- Inspiration from some of the best mentors and teachers in the world.
- A salary and extra money, which I used to spend on improving my flailing health, due to this erratic lifestyle!
- A false sense of security, self-importance and status.
This ultimately cost me:
- My relationship at times
- My energy and health
- Clarity of purpose
- Burn-out at work
- A lot of cash!!
And now since slowing it all down and getting comfy with the art of doing less?
There is no wake up call alarm, my body knows when to awaken thanks to a finely tuned and more healthy system.
Breakfast is enjoyed slowly with my lovely man, still includes the latte, followed by a walk on the beach with my growing pack of dogs.
Yoga is optional and often 3 mornings a week and still needed to ensure I continue practice the “slow”. (It’s still mot always easy for me)
Food is seasonal, home-cooked and eaten mindfully, not on the go .
Focus is dedicated to my business not my busy-ness! plus there is more time and enjoyment of the present moment.
Money is made and affords me ample time to build on my purpose, rather than to spend on ample nutrients and methods that will enhance my energy and dim the stress and burn-out.
Long commutes in the evening are gone and instead there is time for an apertivo with clients or friends, usually enjoyed in the last of the day’s sun.
Late returns home have been replaced by Italian films and bed early.
What this slower and less hectic schedule has really given me is:
- Clarity on my business and brand
- Freedom from needing to keep up with the Jones’
- A connection to the leader within myself , awakening my greatest confidence to date.
- Lasting energy/vitality.
- Simpler and faster decision-making and ironically of all, a greater sense of…..
As well as … Much better lattes , it being Italy and all!
If you’re reading this and you feel uncomfortable with the above, chances are it is time to learn the lost art of doing less and slowing down, busy-less success if you like.
I am not asking you to change your life completely, unless like me you are in the mood to make a courageous leap.
Simply consider how you are spending your days, is there space for slowing down or are you constantly battling the excuse of not having enough time?
From morning latte to lights out , you owe to your body and your business to do a little less and go a little more slowly each day, only then will you ultimately awaken your God-given inherent success!
