The Guide To Standing Out
“In order to be irreplaceable, one must always be different.” Chanel
I found myself half naked in a ladies changing room at the weekend trying on bras and looking at my body in the mirror, wondering if my mother in law was right, perhaps I should have a boob job like cousin Valentina?
Right then the sales woman; a plump blonde in her 50’s entered the changing room demanding to see the style and size of bra I was trying.
To my horror she started shaking her head and sympathetically explained that my size didn’t exist in Italia.
She recommended I try fitting into size “seconda” and said that if I really wanted to fill that size, I’d have to eat more pasta or I could buy the Dolce and Gabbana brand which had major padding and a major price tag!
This scenario got me thinking about how many women are struggling because they’re so busy trying to fit into someone else’s size in life and business , not just bras , instead of recognizing their greatest success comes from standing out from not fitting in with the crowd.
When you see others doing what they love , you automatically think it’s better than where you’re current at and so you’ll jump to try the same desperately seeking to fit in ,forgetting that with purpose it’s never “one size fits all” no matter how exciting it looks on the outside.
How about finding your right fit by getting clear on what inspires you and where your true purpose resides, in my experience that’s what’ll bring you opportunity and success in life, setting you apart from the ordinary crowd.
Here’s a guide to get you there.
1) If everybody is doing it, avoid it.
Most people feel safe in a herd but the herd mentality will keep you stuck and if you’re in it you’re not leading it some other shepherd is .
Action– Consider what opportunities are on the horizon and why you’d choose to do them in the first place. If you can’t find a legitimate reason related to your values and purpose avoid it and go create something of your own instead.
2) Challenge ideas.
If you’re going to stand out you’ll have to stand up and speak your truth instead of agreeing to everything someone says .
Action– Practice disagreeing with people or challenging their ideas, the more comfortable you can get with this the more you’ll hear your own truth and begin to set yourself apart from the maddening crowd.
3) Add value, creatively.
If you want to be remembered you’ll have to get creative with what you offer as value in your business and relationships.
Action– I encourage you to write for 30mins per day to understand your own creative value and to hear your true desires, you can then begin to share these truths in your life and business , adding personal value to people and setting you apart from the maddening crowd.
