The Guide To Simple Self-Care
“People, more than things, have to be restored, renewed, revived, reclaimed and redeemed” A. Hepburn
Not believing in any “God given talent”, Audrey Hepburn pushed herself hard when it came to her career.
Despite her elegant appearance Audrey was quite the workaholic often falling ill on-set needing ample recovery time between productions.
In many cases Audrey reluctantly had to cancel or turn down work because of burn-out and as I write this I wonder how many of you are exhausted as you build your business or dream career?
For this Roman CityGirl, self-care did not come easy in her early years, it was something she had to prioritise and learn to implement.
Let’s face it as entrepreneurs and busy career women we’ve got to prioritise it just as much as Audrey did.
We’re the CEO of the brand right?
So if we’re not well neither is business.
Having researched this icon for many years I’ve chosen to summarise her keys to self-care below.
Audrey’s Manifesto- 7 Keys To Self-Care
1. “I have to be alone very often, it’s how I refuel”
Action: Ask yourself how much time alone you’re experiencing and how comfortable you are with being alone?
Being alone is a great way to gain clarity but most entrepreneurs spend all day working alone thinking that’s enough, it’s not Ladies, you need to connect with you more closely than your audience.
Action: Consider booking yourself some you time, even a hour or two away, notice how this time gets eaten up by others’ demands on you and practice prioritising it instead!
2. “People, more than things, have to be restored, renewed, revived, reclaimed and redeemed.”
You can spend all day restoring your home and office but what are you actually doing to restore and revive yourself?
Action: Consider how you would love to be restored?
Where would you go?
What would you do?
Make a plan to actually implement self-restoration, whether it’s that massage you’re putting off, buying those new skin care products or taking the plunge and travelling abroad.
3. “Let’s face it, a nice creamy chocolate cake does a lot for a lot of people; it does for me.”
Action: Treat yourself to something that nourishes your senses, something you may feel guilty about, that could mean saying yes to sex more often or investing in a mentor to assist you with your business or career .
Choose something you’d normally feel “bad” about doing and go enjoy it today, it’ll send a signal to the Universe you’re ready to receive even more.
4. “Nothing is impossible, the word itself says ‘I’m possible’!”
I love this Audreyism!
Action : Become more caring with your language and how you speak to yourself, often our language is anything but caring , it’s critical and judgemental. Practice speaking in the present positive and turn your impossibles into “I’m possible”.
5. “Laughter is a great calorie burner”
Forget starving yourself to lose weight, that’s hardly self-care instead get away from your desk or computer this weekend and find some fun.
Action: Consider where you could go, what you could do and who with. You might even just hire some funny movies if you can’t currently travel. The key is to find fun!
6. “Most of the time life just happened to me without me ever seeking it”
Self-Care requires you to build trust in yourself and God. To really care for yourself it’s important to stop pushing and instead spend time deepening a connection to yourself, through mediation, journalling and moments of stillness. From here life will start to happen naturally for you as it did for Audrey.

7. “For my whole life, my favorite activity was reading. It’s not the most social pastime ”
Self-Care includes the self not others so get into doing things just for you. For Audrey reading was a form of care. Consider what yours could be ? And no it’s not Facebook or Twitter time!
Action: Be inspired regularly by simple things in life like dining out, reading some books, blogs or magazines that can enable you to feel good. What you read is what you learn and what you learn leads to what you earn!
