CityGirl Guide: Death Of A Day Job-7 Signs It’s Time To Switch Career
“If a man loses pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. Let him step to the music which he hears, however far away” Henry David Thoreau
What do Monday mornings conjure up for you?
Did you know it’s the time of week when the most heart attacks happen?
I’ve often wondered if that’s because so many people are so heart broken at the thought of another week living a life and doing a job they’re no longer inspired by?
I used to dread Mondays, both as a schoolgirl and during my career as a Teacher in a London Boys Comprehensive.
Like most Teachers I lived for weekends, half terms and holidays, never enjoying the present moment but waiting on some future reward for the gruelling routine I found myself in.
Come 5pm on most Sunday’s all that was left of my weekend was this question:
“How am I going to get through the week ahead?”
I realize that I was living that nightmare situation for the best part of 5 years!
One year on and God I’m glad I did it.
It may seem challenging to leave your life, city and steady salary behind but it was much easier for me to move countries and start afresh than continue to experience the ample boredom and burn-out that comes from enduring an unfulfilling career.
” Make Your Vocation Your Vacation”
My Monday mornings are very different now, no more rushed wake-up calls, hour long commutes to work and living life by someone else’s bell.
I now start Monday’s by connecting to CityGirls around the globe before heading off to my own little beach to prepare for the week ahead.
Instead of being caged into a system where you follow the rules “or else” …….
I get to:
- Choose my schedule.
- Choose who I work with and how.
- Choose how much I get paid.
It’s not all an easy ride though.
For example there’s not always a constant stream of steady income and there’s certainly no hiding behind a group of co-workers when things or the boss get tough, but it’s a damn lot healthier and more inspiring than living a lie.
So, if you’re reading this post and already counting down the hours to Friday, or wondering how you’re going to complete all the overdue unfulfilling tasks in front of you, then it’s time to consider your escape route fast.
You’re the captain of your own ship remember and if you don’t steer in the right direction, towards your true destiny, someone else will be steering for you!
Simply open and honour your heart, by discovering what you uniquely are here to do and commit to finding a way to do the work you’d really love.
