3 Ways To Overcome Boredom In Your Career
Are you bored out of your brain at work? Or trapped in some deadly routine?
This morning we had a change of routine.
Instead of the green juice, dog walk, settle down to work routine, myself, The Italian (my man) and The Babs (that’s my dog) took ourselves for a walk in the Puglian hills.
This was great for three reasons:
1) I nurtured my inner Roman CityGirl by taking things slowly & stopping at a bar for coffee, (your Roman loves pleasure and food!).
2) I was applauded a.k.a accepted by the locals for gulping down my cappuccino so fast I created a white moustache, this counter balanced a week on green juice!
3) I got into nature, which nourished my senses enough to inspire this post.
It’s no big deal, I know , but when you feel like you’ve binged on the computer all week, going somewhere new, away from your desk or job is great for your soul.
Truth is lot’s of women I know spend ample time at work or on their laptops building their dream careers, all the while trapped in routine.
Newsflash Ladies: Routine is boring you and killing your career .
In fact if you’re doing the same thing everyday, you may as well be back in your soulless City day job if you’re not still there!
Even though I’m finally free of the classroom, I still fall into a myriad of other boring routines.
Like for a while I was so excited about there being a pro coffee machine in my new home that I drunk lattes every morning, without any sense of pleasure at all, this is how to recognise routine, when all the pleasure is gone.
The way I’m now bringing pleasure to my life and work is through :
- A change of routine and environment.
- A bit of exercise- Walking and dancing.
- Lattes when I actually want one.
- Panini’s made by local Puglian women who compete to be my Nona (grandmother)
(My own Nona is not impressed with the competition but happiest when I eat lots of food, not green juice, because it signifies I’m becoming Pugliese which really means I’m getting fat enough now to bear children for her, yes for her, not for me!)
Notice that all of that has more to do with satisfying my senses than sitting at my desk focusing on the job at hand which is a totally boring way to find solutions & get results.
Whether you’re a seasoned Entrepreneur , still in a full time job and especially if you’re in the “I don’t know what else I could do as a job” camp you’ll benefit from below, a change of place, pace and routine.
CityGirl Guide: 3 Ways To Overcome Boredom In Your Career
1) Get away from the “norm”.
If you’re confined to a 9-5 job aim to book a trip somewhere totally new for next weekend, one of my clients commits to travelling one weekend per month for pleasure & inspiration, I’m certain it’s enabling speedy transformation for her!
If you’re an Entrepreneur shake up your routine by making at least one morning different than the rest this week.
For example if you really need to work go do it in a cafe or a beautiful space. I like to go here Bhive Covent Garden when working in London, much nicer than some dirty Starbucks!
2) Move your booty.
I’m sounding American after watching the movie Beauty Shop last night where Alicia Silverstone shook her booty like a hot mama.
Seriously though movement does something that sitting at a desk can’t, so when you’re really bored or stuck for an idea take yourself out for a walk, dance in your classroom (worked for me) or cubicle or in the toilets at work, do whatever it takes to warm the blood and reactivate the mind.
3) Cook or get creative elsewhere.
Nourishing your senses will satisfy your soul, but not forever, only until you find out what you really could be doing with your life!
In the meantime try new foods , a new class or a new language, whatever works.
I’ve been cooking a different dish every night this week and as I’ve been stirring a sauce or peeling a veggie creative ideas have been popping up, it’s like all of a sudden when you start doing something new, you get the answers you’ve been waiting a lifetime for!
What are your tips for dealing with a 92 yr old Italian Nona who pressures you to eat more and have more sex for her benefit? And what do you do to shake up your routine and overcome boredom at work ?
