I’ve been inspired to create this celeb interview series because I’ve long believed that “who you surround yourself with is who you become” so its my hope to surround you with some of the most influential, successful and stylish women in the self-help field, so that you can short-cut your way to success by implementing their tried and tested techniques and routines.
Today’s interview features celebrity nutritionist and best selling author , Cynthia Pasquella .
Cynthia has worked with clients like Blake Lively, Sandra Bullock and Charlize Theron.
She is also a best-selling author and nutrition expert for Dr. Phil, The Doctors and The Today Show as well as many others. She’s been called a thought-leader for the new generation by Dr. Phil and Gabrielle Bernstein and she totally is!
Grace: Welcome to the CityGirl Guide Cynthia!
Cynthia: Thanks Grace , what an honour to be here with you and your tribe!
Grace: So let’s get straight in Cynthia , tell us how you transformed your body and career from physical and financial burn-out to stunning health, wealth and Hollywood success?
Cynthia: Well, after growing up on a farm as a child where we grew all of our own food , I decided to try something not so “country like” and I headed to the City where I first tried the corporate route and found out that just wasn’t my thing. A windowless office and 60 hour work weeks? No, thanks. Time to move on.So I headed to Hollywood, was a model, did some television hosting, hung out with movie stars, rock stars, and tried hard to be just like everyone else, but my lifestyle soon caught up with me Grace.
I gained over 25 pounds, had cystic acne, eczema, and cellulite in places I didn’t know you could get cellulite!
My hair was breaking and falling out. I battled eating disorders. I was always exhausted – physically and mentally, depressed, and even suicidal at times.I tried every diet known to man, saw doctors, nutritionists, trainers, healers, and each one of them seemed to have a piece of the puzzle but no one could put them together.
So I did what any woman would do, I decided enough was enough , I was going to do whatever it takes to heal my own body and see this through.
I threw myself into studying, researching, experimenting. I tested theories, thoughts, and beliefs.What I found wasn’t just a way to lose weight, clear my skin, get rid of that pesky cellulite, and heal my mind.I also found something I realized I had been looking for all of my adult life : Freedom.
I was finally free from obsessing over food all day and night, worrying about everything I put in my mouth, and counting every calorie. I no longer cared about what anyone thought. I didn’t want to be like everyone else.I finally discovered that it was time to be ME. Little ‘ol, not-always-perfect-but-trying-really-darn-hard-and-thats-ok ME!
I was now living life on my own terms – healthy, happy, real, and free and that’s when things really changed for me.
Having hit rock bottom I found purpose and from there I decided to rebuild my life and career based on what I’d been through so that other women don’t have to suffer what I’ve been through, now the opportunities just seem to flow through.
Grace: Beautiful Cynthia, no wonder your new cookbook, The Hungry Hottie, is so powerful with a message like that to share!
In the book you claim that “A Hungry Hottie chooses foods that allows her to live consciously so she can manifest the life of her dreams” . Could you explain how food actually plays a role in helping us create this life that we desire?
Cynthia -Oh I’d love to! It’s so important.
Food really needs to be looked at for what it is. Primarily, its fuel for our body, right? And if it’s fuel for our body, it’s fuel for our work and it’s fuel for everything that we do.Food is also an experience that should be enjoyed. It’s a way of nourishing not just the body but also the soul.
I don’t know if you do this or not Grace, but I’m a big manifester. I really look at something that I want and I focus on it and I set out to get that – whether it’s in business or life. I really do focus all of my energies on that and food has been a major catalyst for me in transforming my life into what I desire. When I’m eating a lot of plants and healthy foods like this, it increases my vibrational frequency. Meaning I have more energy, I think clearer, I make better decisions. And also from a spiritual perspective, I can really call in things that benefit me and that benefit people who hear my work so living consciously and being present and being mindful in eating ,this way, is so key for foundation for achieving all of the other things that we’re looking to achieve in our lives.
Grace- Makes sense right, everything is energy after all so the food we eat must affect our energy and I guess plants are the gentlest food of all?
Cynthia: Right! And you know you don’t have to eat only plants Grace , it’s what I advocate because it worked wonders for me , but I’ve got lots of high profile clients who eat meat and dairy too, they simply just make plants the main part of the meal now.
Grace-How do you currently start your day Cynthia ?
Cynthia- Essentially, I do have a morning routine. And I’ll say I think routines are very important for people. When you have that routine and you can anticipate what’s coming next and there’s no surprises, you really set the tone for the rest of the day.
So I wake up with my daughter , I roll over and I just look at her and she’s usually just staring at me with this big beautiful blue eyes and I always say “Good morning”.That’s the first thing I do – good morning with a big smile on my face just letting her know that I’m so happy she’s here and I’m so happy she chose me. My daughter is a huge part of my life. I designed my entire business to be able to be with her and still work. So that’s really important, my days are very busy so I really do cherish that time with her first thing in the morning.
Once we get up we kind of pat about a little bit, head into the kitchen. I always start with a glass of warm water and freshly squeezed lemon. I usually squeeze about half of a lemon.When we are asleep at night Grace, our body is detoxifying, right? It’s cleansing, it’s repairing itself, it’s getting rid of waste which is why first thing in the morning sometimes, you know, we don’t always smell like roses. And our breathe isn’t exactly super kissable, it’s because the body has been cleansing and so it’s really important to help it sort of finish that process first thing in the morning.
And that’s what just some fresh water and lemon juice will do – just really stimulate the liver, help the body detoxify and get rid of all those not-so-fun things that your body has cleansed overnight. Once I do that, I usually go back and sit and I meditate. I practice TM, which is a transcendental meditation. It is a form of meditation that allows me to really reconnect. I do this twice a day actually but the first times in the morning 20 minutes no longer I don’t sit and ponder for hours; I don’t have the time to do that.
And then I come out of meditation. I have a journal that I keep on my desk. It’s a really beautiful journal and what I’ll do is to write down my intention for that day.
Grace: So what are the top 3 things you believe every woman should do first thing in the morning to set herself up for success all day?
1) Give thanks upon awakening, this moves you to a high vibration first thing where you can begin to crete and generate more of what you are thankful for.
2)Drink hot water with half a lemon squeezed in, this will renew your system and cleanse your body making you ready from the inside out for the day ahead.
3) Journal ,Meditate and Set your intention for that day. This forms a foundation upon which you can generate and attract success with ease & grace all day.
Grace- What about breakfast Cynthia, most busy women don’t have time for it, can you recommend anything from The Hungry Hottie Cookbook to set us up for a productive day?
Cynthia : My breakfast is literally 5 minutes and that’s it.
I savor it and I really enjoy it but almost 100% of the time except on weekends or special dates, my breakfast is a smoothie.I drink ahungry hottie smoothie. This is the recipe that I have created years ago because I love chocolates, right? And I love smoothies and I need to get my day going and I’ll tell you what’s in it ,I’ll just give you guys the recipe from the book: So I use a banana and I use a cup of coconut milk and I use a serving of plant based protein powder. I love hemp protein powder. That’s sort of my thing.
I use SoCal cleanse organic hemp protein cuz it’s also detoxifying. I put in a cup of frozen strawberries, I put in a fourth of an apple, and I toss in one teaspoon of raw cacao powder. So it’s like this chocolate strawberry, it’s a beautiful delicious shake. And it’s packful of fiber, it’s packful of essential fatty acids, and healthy fats from the coconut milk and the plant based protein. And the apple really cleanses the body and has, again, more fiber in it to really balance your hunger so that you don’t have this crazy sugar cravings and want something else than 30 minutes.
This smoothie keeps me full for hours ! The other thing that I do is literally again 5 minutes is called “5 minute Berry Delicious Oat”. I have steel cut oats which I place in the vitamix, which is a high speed blender and you blend it almost until it’s like a flour consistency. You bring water to boil while you’re putting them in there and then all you do is whisk those oats, you stir them, they’re literally done in 3-5 minutes. And then you sprinkle a little bit of cinnamon on there, a little bit of stevia, and hop on some berries, put some coconut milk and I’m good to go!
