3 Easy Ways Busy City Women Can Slow Down And Enjoy More Time
“True Wealth is Discretionary Time” Alan Weiss
It’s been almost a year now since I left London life behind and I’ll admit that I’m still shedding the layers of that fast-paced city persona every single day.
To say life has changed dramatically is an understatement; it really couldn’t be more different.
- Gone are the regular bouts of burn-out and exhaustion.
- No more eating and meeting on the go with a blackberry buzzing in hand.
- My career is focused in one clear direction now with an end to that burning question I had for so many years:
“What am I here to do” ?
If I’d known a year ago that in order to gain real clarity and direction regarding my purpose and career I would be:
- Spending ample time relaxing by the sea,
- Indulging in meditation
- Eating healthy seasonal foods accompanied by amazing local wine
I would have totally resisted going.
Because back then slowing down scared the hell out of me but as a mentor of mine pointed out, what good is speed if you’re going in the wrong direction?
Slowing down and being still meant that all the emotions I’d so successfully suppressed with all my “self-important busyness”, might finally come to the surface.
Slowing down meant handing over the control buttons, letting go and potentially becoming “Miss Nobody” all over again.
I look back and see how much I had to prove, to both myself and others, as though being busy and working 18 hour days equaled real success!?
The truth is since leaving that competitive, rushed life behind I’ve started to find not only direction but also real success.
Success is different for everyone but for me I’m finding it in doing the work I love whilst having ample time for myself.
Slowing down and finding time, just for me, was a luxury I couldn’t afford to have during those London CityGirl years.
How many of you reading this feel the same?
I never thought about time in terms of wealth before, yet it’s true that without time for yourself and what you enjoy you’re stuck in survival mode, even if financially you’re a millionaire!
Many of you busy Career Women and Entrepreneurs are in survival mode too.
You might be earning well or working for yourself now but where’s the time just for you and all the things you’d truly love to do?
CityGirl Guide: 3 Easy Ways To Enjoy More Time
1- Prioritise YOU time.
Time like money is a priority issue, that means its never missing Ladies, it’s simply that you’re choosing to prioritise your time elsewhere and generally making you time come last.
Consider why you put yourself last?
What are you getting out of this ?
What are you avoiding by remaining fast and busy and available for everyone else but yourself?
Make a decision this week to spend a minimum of 30 mins per day on you, that can be slow time, alone time or a date with yourself!
Simply start no matter how scary or how busy you might be right now.
What will you do? Where will you go? How will you treat the time you have with you?
2- Stop giving away your time.
Constantly saying “yes” to demands on your time costs you both financially and physically in the longterm.
Become mindful of when your allowing your time to be wasted or given away as a commodity rather than treated as a valuable asset.
This week practice saying “No” more often to others and “Yes” more often to yourself , log what emotions arise for you in doing so.
If you feel guilty or shameful chances are you’re not valuing yourself and the world will be mirroring this too!
In saying no to others demands and yes to you, you’ll begin to up-level your life and your own sense of worth seeing immediate effects financially, physically and romantically.
3- Log your time.
Make a log of 1 hour increments this week and notice where your time is really going then list your 5 major activities this week. How much time did you give to each one?
Which were what you wanted to do and which were things you felt you should do.
How much of your time has been spent helping others at the expense of your own needs and desires?
Be honest with yourself in looking back over your time and commit to making changes in the next week ahead to ensure you’re having ample time for you, your creativity and desires.
Your health and wealth depend on it!
